It’s hard to believe that in Northwest Georgia, July means the end of summer vacation and back to school in many of our communities. For students and parents, it may seem like just as you have settled in to a summer groove, it’s time to start thinking about the back to school season again and the large expense that typically comes along with it from school supplies to meals. First National Community Bank has outlined helpful money saving tips to help parents and students prepare for back to school shopping and the school year ahead.

  1. Make A List

While your school will provide you with a list of needed supplies, we all know that the list is just the starting point. You will likely need a new backpack, clothes and shoes – not to mention haircuts. It is important to make a list of these items and do some research ahead of time so you know how much to budget. A list will also help you avoid impulse buys.

  1. Create A Budget

It is very important to create a budget so that you know how much money you have available to spend. As mentioned above, doing research ahead of time to price out the items you need and want will help you stay within your budget and avoid overspending on unnecessary or overpriced items. Budgeting is not only important during the back to school season but throughout life.

  1. Comparison Shop

Take the time to research the best deals whenever you have the opportunity. There are many back to school sales happening at different times in the weeks leading up to the start of school and even thereafter. Doing your research as to what certain items cost ahead of time and comparing them among stores will help ensure you are maximizing your back to school dollars. Other great ways to save are price matching, buying generic and shopping at the neighborhood thrift store.

  1. Look For Manufacturer Coupons

Look online and through in-store flyers for manufacturer coupons from supply companies like Mead and Bic. You can also find coupons in magazines geared toward parents like Parenting.

Getting ready for the new school year doesn’t have to break the budget. By planning ahead, budgeting and comparison shopping it’s a great opportunity to start teaching your children how to build sound financial habits.
